Bonjour

hi, you can use english here.

Cat8 is not needed, is overkill and not designed for office/house but for datacenter.

The existing Cat6 cables are fine up to 55 meters (180 ft). CAt6a or Cat7 would have been better eventually but it won't make a difference unless the apartment is very big. So no point changing the existing Cat6 cables.

If you want every RJ45 plug to be able to work at 10GBps you'll need a 10GBps switch with enough ports. But usually it's not needed , only a few devices are compatible with 10Gbps.

The most important point before buying anything is understanding where the Freebox will be located and where the RJ45 patch panel is located. Having them in the same spot is much simpler but can sometimes hinder Wifi so a Wifi access point might be needed too.

Provide us a layout plan and where you want 10Gbps connectivity and we can tell you what to buy.

Thanks a lot for your help. It clarified few of my requirements.

As this is the first time installation, there's no existing setup (switches, wires etc) in the apartment and would like to know what exactly should i buy.

I was thinking of Cat8 due to the fact that the wires would be installed in ceiling/walls, so it would be better to install something that would easily cover next 10 years. But looking at your response I believe cat 6a should be fine as well.

The apartment size is 82 m2 (please refer attached plan). Basically I require ethernet sockets in 3 areas :
1. Office: 6 ports [4 ports including one 10Gbps + 2 ports] - rest port to support 1 gbps
2. Room2 : 2 ports [one 10Gbps + one 1 Gbps]
3. Common room [Tv area]: 6-8 ports including 1 10gbps

In addition to above i would like to have good wifi throughout the apartment and I believe it can be achieved through Freebox pop wifi repeater.

So what would be your recommendation to achieve this setup?

And with respect to installing the wires, should we install 18 separate wires from the apartment entrance [where switch and router will be placed] to each point of ethernet port?

Many thanks.

18 separate wires is overkill for this size. It might not fit in the entrance closet.
or add fiber optic sockets too (but it's harder to find a contractor for this).

The total number of sockets is a compromise between cabling cost, space for cables, for the patch panel and for the switch(es) in the entrance closet, etc.

Usually 2 sockets per room is enough.

Where the sockets are placed is more important than the number of sockets to facilitate cable management and aesthetic. It's usually more future proof to have 2 sockets , one on each opposite walls then 2 sockets next to each other on the same wall.

If you need more sockets in a room you can just add a small fanless switch (with 10 Gbps uplink if needed). Also a big central switch might not fit in the entrance closet (bigger switches are also usually noisy to very noisy).

Given the drawing, the minimum needed is:

Office: 2 wall sockets (top right corner and middle left)
Room 2: 1 wall socket (top right)
Common room: 2  wall sockets (but even 1 would probably be enough if all the devices are in the same spot). (near TV and one top right or top right)
and also at least 1 socket in room 1.

To have 10 Gbps in a room, you'll need either to use a direct socket to the central switch or a local switch with a 10 Gbps uplink and at least a downlink 10 Gbps port.
Beware to no use a noisy switch in a room.

ofc, If you can afford it and if everything fit in the entrance closet then go for more sockets per room.

Thank you for your Guidance.

The contractor has recommended ACOLAN 450 FUD 2*4P 24 AWG F/UTP CAT. 6 450MHz cable. However as per the attached pdf it mentions "Câbles Ethernet 2,5Gb" in the product description. Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong, but does it mean this wire supports 2.5Gbps only? or does it refer to something else? as I understand from theoretical perspective that cat 6 wires will support 10Gbps network.

Is this a good wire or should i look for something else.

I will check with contractor regarding the space issue at the entrance, but if its possible to install 18 wires for 18 sockets, which switch would you recommend?

Many thanks for your help.

Regards

Hello,

I have tried to make a revised plan for the network and looking for some suggestions here:

Summary:
1. Switch [having at least 4 SFP+ ports] will be placed at entrance and will be connected to Freebox through SFP+ to SFP+
2. 4 Cat6a wires from the switch at entrance to throughout the house [1 for TV room, 2 for Office, 1 for Room 2]. Four backup wires will also be installed.
3. These Cat 6a wires will be connected to the switch at the entrance through SFP+RJ45 connectors
4. The other end of the cable will be wall mounted using RJ45 keystone for Cat 6a
5. Extra switch will be placed at TV room [8 ports] & Office [4 port - middle left]. In room 2 & office top left corner only 1 wall mounted socket.

Few questions
I need one 10 gbps connection at TV room and one 10Gbps in office middle left section. Suppose I place 10Gbps enabled switch both in TV area and in Office:
- How to connect keystone jack (Point A. in the diagram) with switch to enable 10 Gbps speed?
- How to connect Switch to the Device 1 (Point B. in the diagram) to enable 10 Gbps speed. For e.g. in my Mac mini I have 10 Gbps ethernet port and I would like to connect it in Office switch?
- Also If I want to setup 10 Gbps connection in Room 2, with the cat 6a ethernet wire from wall socket RJ45 (Keystone jack Point A room 2) to 10gbps ethernet port RJ45 on my computer. Will it deliver theoretical 10 Gbps internet connectivity?

Is this plan practical? will it provide 10 gbps theoretical connectivity?

Many thanks
