French alternative operator Bouygues Telecom has selected UK firm NDS to provide set-top box software components and professional services, including systems integration, for the new IPTV platform it is developing.

The STB software components that NDS is providing will include a graphical engine to power an enhanced user experience with HD and 3D capability, and an application manager engine to enable the development and management of a whole host of innovative new apps based on HTML5 and Flash.

Bouygues recently confirmed that it will be launching a cloud gaming service called 'Bbox Games' this spring for its triple-play subscribers, based on a white-label games-on-demand service from Israeli firm Playcast Media Systems.

The operator plans to launch its new home gateway this spring, called the 'Bbox Sensation' and developed in partnership with Samsung. The device will be able to stream content to TVs, tablets and smartphones, feature a 320 GB hard drive, run on the Intel Atom CE 4200 (Groveland) multimedia processor, and include OptimzAir Wi-Fi technology from Celeno.

Editor's view: Bouygues has already carved itself a place in the French pay-TV market, and looks set to build on this success with some innovative new offerings in 2012 - its concepts for cloud gaming and streaming content from the home gateway to TVs, tablets and smartphones being among the most exciting.
